Ambivert
Your answers fall in the middle of the scale, which is often called being an ambivert. You may enjoy company and time alone about equally, and which side shows may depend on the situation. Many people end up here.
What the score means
The 24 answers are combined into a score from 0 to 100. Below 37 we call introvert, from 37 to 63 ambivert and above 63 extrovert. These limits describe the answer scale. A score of 70 does not mean you are more extroverted than 70% of people.
Your six facets
Extraversion is made up of several traits, and they do not always point the same way. You can love deep friendships and still avoid big parties, or be quiet and still like to lead.
- FriendlinessYou find it easy to make contact and feel at ease with people.94
- GregariousnessYou like company, but not all the time or in every size.44
- AssertivenessYou take the lead when needed, but do not have to.44
- Activity levelYou are busy at times and take it easy at other times.50
- Excitement seekingYou like some excitement, as long as it does not go too far.38
- CheerfulnessYou often feel joy and tend to see the bright side.81
How you can use this
- Notice which settings give you energy and which drain you. That matters more than the label.
- Use your flexibility: you can often both lead a conversation and listen, so choose what the situation needs.
- Watch for weeks with too much of one thing. You may need a balance of company and quiet.
Common misunderstandings
- Being introverted is not the same as being shy. Shyness is about fear of how others judge you. An introvert may simply prefer calm, and an extrovert can be shy.
- Introverts are not antisocial. Many have close relationships and enjoy company, but in smaller doses or smaller groups.
- Neither end is better. Each has its strengths, and the same person can behave differently at work, at home and with friends.
- Ambivert is an everyday word, not a separate type in research. It simply means the middle of the scale.
What this test can tell you
- This is the extraversion part of the IPIP-NEO-120 personality inventory. It is a self-report, so it shows how you describe yourself.
- The score has no norms here, so it cannot show how you compare with other people. The Big Five test on this site gives a broader picture of your personality.
- Extraversion in this inventory also includes activity level, excitement seeking and cheerfulness. A lower score on those does not mean you are unhappy or passive, and each facet is based on only four statements.
- The test does not measure social anxiety or any other mental health condition. If fear of social situations limits your life, consider talking to a doctor or psychologist.
