Questionnaire / instrument: IPIP scales for Cattell's 16 personality factors
What does it measure?
Sixteen dimensions of personality, including warmth, emotional stability, assertiveness, sensitivity, self-reliance and orderliness. These are continuous traits, not sixteen personality types.
Where does it come from?
The questionnaire uses the preliminary IPIP scales for constructs similar to those in Cattell’s sixteen-factor model. Goldberg’s IPIP work supplies the freely available items and scoring keys.
How is the result calculated?
The 163 responses are combined into sixteen scale averages, after adjusting reverse-keyed items. Each score is displayed between its descriptive poles on a 0–100 response scale.
What can the result tell you?
This is not the commercial 16PF questionnaire or a test from its publisher. The intellect scale is self-reported, not a reasoning ability test. No official 16PF norms are used.
Languages and adaptations
Some item translations are reused from our existing IPIP banks; other wording was translated for this site with AI assistance. Translation does not by itself establish that a scale has the same measurement properties in another language.
License and reuse
Public domainIPIP places its items and scales in the public domain. They may be used, copied, adapted and translated for commercial and non-commercial purposes without a fee or separate permission.
The terms below apply to the test materials. Articles, translations, software and our result descriptions may have separate terms.
