Questionnaire / instrument: IPIP-NEO-300

What does it measure?

The same five personality traits and 30 facets as the shorter Big Five test, with more questions per facet. It suits people who want to spend more time describing the nuances of their personality.

Where does it come from?

The full IPIP-NEO inventory uses Goldberg’s public-domain IPIP scales for constructs similar to those in the NEO personality inventories. John A. Johnson’s online work helped make this 300-item form widely available.

How is the result calculated?

Ten items contribute to each facet and 60 to each broad trait. Reverse-keyed answers are adjusted before scores are combined. The longer questionnaire samples each facet more extensively than the 120-item version.

What can the result tell you?

More items do not remove self-report bias or guarantee an accurate judgement about an individual. This is the IPIP questionnaire, not the commercial NEO PI-R. The report describes tendencies and should be interpreted in context.

Languages and adaptations

Question wording comes from published IPIP translations where available, volunteer translations and our own translations. Coverage and wording vary by language. Our public research pages document the IPIP-NEO translations and their change history.
