Increased risk
Your answers suggest that your drinking is above low-risk levels and may harm you over time. For many people, cutting down is enough. Simple advice from a doctor can help.
A score of 8 or more is the WHO manual's general sign of risky drinking. For women and for men over 65, a limit one point lower finds more people at risk.
Some of your answers are signs the WHO manual asks clinicians to take extra seriously, whatever the total: repeated problems stopping, failing to do what was expected of you, needing a morning drink, or injury or concern from others in the past year.
You answered that an injury or someone's concern happened earlier than the past year. The WHO manual says this is worth keeping in mind, even if your drinking is lower now.
This is a screening test, not a diagnosis. Only a health professional can assess alcohol use disorder. The manual calls its limits tentative, and they can vary between countries.
The three parts of the test
The manual groups the questions into three parts. Points on the second and third parts matter even if your total is low.

- Signs of dependenceQuestions 4–6: loss of control, neglected duties and morning drinking3/12

Good to know
- The AUDIT was developed by the World Health Organization to find risky drinking early, before serious problems arise.
- It covers the past year, so it says little about a recent change in your drinking.
- A standard drink differs between countries, so your answers on the amounts are approximate.
- The test depends on honest answers. Many people underestimate how much they drink.
- It should not be used to decide whether it is safe to drive, or to drink during pregnancy. In pregnancy, no alcohol is the safe choice.
